South Korea buying AWACS aircraft from Boeing
This will be a $4.9 billion deal for Boeing.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress Monday that South Korea intends to purchase four E-7 Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning & Control (AEW&C) aircraft. Still colloquially known as “AWACS”, these aircraft are improved versions of the old E-3 Sentry Airborne Warning and Control System aircraft that first got the AWACS name.
Including the cost of installed and spare CFM56 engines built by a Safran-GE Aerospace joint venture, AN/AAR-57 AN/AAQ 24(V)N Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) Systems, and other installed electronic equipment, the total purchase price of these aircraft will exceed $4.9 billion.
Boeing (NYSE: BA) is named principal contractor on the sale, and will receive this price as revenue if the sale is approved by Congress.
