Taiwan seeks $2 billion arms sale from US, Raytheon
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress in late October that Taiwan intends to purchase AN/TPS-77 and AN/TPS-78 ground-based radar systems for medium to long range air surveillance. Additionally, the Taiwanese intend to purchase National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) and related equipment.
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) makes the AN/TPS-77 and Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) makes the AN/TPS-78, however, Taiwan will be buying these systems second-hand from U.S. Air Force stockpiles, for an estimated cost of $828 million.
As regards, the NASAMS, Taiwan will purchase three complete medium-range air defense systems, with included AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel radar systems and a total of123 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles-Extended Range (AMRAAM-ER) to fire from them.
RTX Corporation (NYSE: RTX) is named principal contractor on the latter sale, which will be worth $1.16 billion if approved by Congress.
The total value of the two arms deals thus amounts to just under $2 billion in value.
